There are three types of the Griffon, the Griffon Bruxellois which is red in colour and has a rough or harsh coat , the Griffon Belge which can be black or black & tan and also has a rough or harsh coat and the Petit Brabancon which has a smooth coat and comes in all three colours . Although there are three types they can be bred together and therefore there can be both rough and smooth coated puppies born into the same litter .
These delightful dogs come from Brussels and although originally used by coachmen to keep down rats in their stables they became a favorite of the wealthy ladies of the time and soon became a popular pet . They were refined into the breed we know today by crossing in breeds such as the King Charles Spaniel, the Pug and the Yorkshire Terrier . The Griffon is a delightful little breed to own as they are good natured and love to be around people, they are also good little watch dogs .
It is the mission of the Club to promote the Griffon breeds here in Ireland and therefore we welcome all inquiries on where to buy a well bred puppy. Where to find a a groomer who is properly trained in the art of hand stripping, the correct way to groom a Griffon, advice on training your new puppy for the show ring if you wish to start showing and also advice on breeding if you wish to breed your Griffon in the future .
